Here is an extremely interesting article on the topic of education in the US, recently published by Global Research. This is an important information for parents whose children attend educational institutions at various levels: – The Dumbing Down of America – By Design
I am aware that United States and Canada are not the only Western countries in which this phenomenon is taking place in a highly organized and coordinated manner. As an elementary public school teacher in Ontario, I have witnessed a similar “reform” in our education system that was initiated by the Mike Harris conservative government in late 1990’s.
For me, personally, and for many older teachers, who remembered the “old, good days”, this was an extremely frustrating and stressful experience. As we could compare the “old” and the “new”, we understood what was going on. In our opinion, this was a deliberate destruction of education. This knowledge has also prompted the “illegal” 1997 teachers walkout across the province. The Ontario government, with the help of some media outlets, responded with unprecedented teacher-bashing propaganda in order to soften the impact of our strike action and public information campaign.
Since then, a new curriculum, new evaluation procedures, new assessment tools, and new reporting mechanisms have been put in place. Provincial testing was introduced, allowing the government and the Boards to monitor the process and to correct any deviations from the new course. After the “reorganization” of our teachers’ federation, which followed the 1997 walkout, the Elementary Teachers‘ Federation of Ontario generally accepted new education policies. The Ontario College of Teachers was created, with annual renewal of teacher’s licences and broad powers to deal with “unprofessional” teachers. At my board of education level, I have personally witnessed what looked like an unofficial, but effective mechanism for disciplining and/or removing teachers who actively criticized and opposed the changes.
In 2006, I have written an article “New World Order and Education“. It was re-printed by progressive media in the US and in Europe. Responses and comments of foreign teachers, who read this article, showed that similar reforms were taking place in their countries, as well.
As I spent several years on disability and finally retired in 2015, I am not aware of the current situation in Ontario schools. One disturbing development that seems to follow the initial “reforms” is the fact that, after effectively destroying quality of education and parental authority, the state, through the school system, is now taking over the role of the parents. This includes the introduction of some parts of the curriculum that many parents oppose. It so happens that these parts of the curriculum can also be seen as a tool in “dumbing down” and demoralizing our children.
What we see, in my opinion, is an attempt, by the state, to forcefully take away from parents the upbringing of children, as well as an attempt to centrally modify cultural values of the society from the top down. These domains were traditionally independent and the state should not interfere in families or in the culture of the nation. This is not “the state’s job”. These new policies look like a social engineering project by a government that increasingly acts as if we were not in Canada but, instead, in some communist country.
In the era of transition to globalization and so called “New World Order”, these trends do not surprise me at all. For somebody who grew up, went to school, and began a teaching career in a communist country, they were actually expected. This is why I have a unique perspective to see what I see. “If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck…” it definitely is not a hummingbird.
“There is a campaign under way to essentially destroy the public education system along with every aspect of human life and attitudes and thought that involve social solidarity. It’s being done in all sorts of ways. One is simply by underfunding. So, if you can make the public schools really rotten, people will look for an alternative. Any service that’s going to be privatized, the first thing you do is make it malfunction so people can say, “We want to get rid of it. It’s not running. Let’s give it to Lockheed.” — Noam Chomsky, The Progressive Magazine, September 1999, p.37
