Unprecedented delays in processing income tax returns

Letter to the Minister of National Revenue:

The Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, P.C., M.P.
Minister of National Revenue
7th Floor
555 MacKenzie Avenue
Ottawa ON  K1A 0L5

Dear Ms Lebouthillier,

This letter addresses policy issues that have a negative and unacceptable impact on Canadian taxpayers. Therefore, I urge you to, please, read it and to correct the issues involved.

My 2016 income tax has been erroneously assessed and this has been admitted by the CRA agents that I spoke to. The error has not been corrected by the CRA since but it is causing a delay in the processing of my 2017 Income Tax Return and in releasing of the rather substantial refund I have this year.

I have explained and documented the error in my correspondence with the agency. I spoke to the CRA agents on four different occasions. I filed the Service Related Complaint (Form RC-193). I am being repeatedly told that there is nothing the agents can do to speed up the process. I am being told that, this year, there are serious delays in processing the Income Tax Returns because “the agency is improving the system”.  It hardly looks like an “improvement”, when it is causing delays in processing and delays in releasing the refunds. It is a deterioration of the service that results in a failure to meet the deadlines. In my case, it prevents me from paying my credit line loan and causes additional interest charges that I have to pay.

I don’t know what is causing the delays but I am old enough to remember that the government was always able to keep the deadlines, even before the computerization, when all processing was done manually. It looks like the government does not hire enough people to do the job on time. A number of offices have been closed and, now, the taxpayers have to absorb the burden. This is not right. This is wrong.

If there is not enough money in the budget to hire more people, perhaps the government should restore fair taxes, customs and duties for the corporations. System in which the economy improves at the expense of the people is a colonial system. It is a wrong system.

Please help resolve these issues as soon as possible.

Respectfully yours,

Lech Biegalski
