Comment: “Doing what’s best for the whole” mindset is called “collectivism”, where collective rights are more important that the rights of individuals. We have seen it in Nazi Germany, we have seen it in communist countries. It is not science. It is an IDEOLOGY. It was invented and it is being used for political ends, mainly to justify totalitarian systems and authoritarian control over societies. It does not serve the people. The people are individuals. Without a broad recognition of individual rights, there is no freedom. This is where we are heading.
It is exactly for this reason that the following principles of international law were established:
Article 3 – Human dignity and human rights
1. Human dignity, human rights and fundamental freedoms are to be fully respected.
2. The interests and welfare of the individual should have priority over the sole interest of science or society.
